Those words, from one of my favorite hymns, really gripped me during the summer I wrote most of the songs for my first kids' album. The sovereignty and mightiness of God is constantly under challenge - and not just from the world, but from the church!!
I want kids to be able to take comfort in knowing that God, contrary to popular belief, is actually still in control. Over the course of a lifetime, questions will be raised, and foundations will be shaken. Oh, the distress that comes from not being confident in the sovereignty of God! When your kids are faced with those tough situations, you don't want them to turn to questioning God's power or authority. You want them to examine the situation at hand in the light of the unquestionable power and authority of God! It sounds so simple, but it's so easy to overlook!
I imagine parents singing the chorus to this tune when their young ones start asking really hard questions, or when their kids start experiencing disappointment at deeper levels. They might be annoyed at first, but how amazing it would be if the answer to those tough times was always wrapped in the idea that "I know that God is in control!!"
